How to Keep a Simple Sleep Diary for One or Two Weeks
Record a small set of consistent observations that can reveal patterns without turning sleep into an all-night measurement project.

Record the same items each morning
Note bedtime, estimated time to fall asleep, awakenings, final wake time, and when you got out of bed. Rough estimates are sufficient.
Add daytime context
Record naps, caffeine timing, unusual stress, exercise, medication changes, and periods of strong sleepiness.
Look for patterns, not perfect data
Compare workdays and free days, regular and irregular timing, and how sleep relates to next-day function.
Share the diary when useful
A concise diary can support a professional conversation. It cannot diagnose a disorder or replace objective testing when that is needed.
